더 그레이트 게임 THE GREAT GAME 1

왜 그레이트 게임이냐고?

 

지금 미국이 왜 이렇게 중국을 못잡아 먹어 안달인지,

왜 중동에선 끊임없이 분쟁이 일어나고 전쟁이 일어날 수 밖에 없는지...

또 앞으로 그 분쟁지역이 왜 한반도로 옮겨질 수도 있는지를....,

200년 전 일어났던 영국과 러시아간의 패권경쟁속에서

발견할 수 있기 때문이다.

 

이것을 알고나면 세계국제정세 안에서 대한민국의 역사를

설명할 수 있는 큰 안목이 생기게 되고

그럼, 지금 우리는 어떠한 국제적 상황 가운데 있는지,

또 지금 우리는 어떤 선택을 해야 대한민국을 더 위대하고 강하게 만들 수 있는지

볼 수 있는 눈이 열리기 때문이다.

 

[책 속으로]

러시아가 영국이 차지하고 있는 인도를 삼키기 위해 중앙아시아를 넘어 야금야금 쳐들어 오고 있는 것을 막기 위한 영국과의 전쟁을 '그레이트 게임 THE GREAT GAME' 이라고 말한다.

 

 

최고의 보물, 즉 런던과 캘커타에서는 빼앗길까 봐 걱정을 하고

아시아에서 근무하는 야심만만한 러시아 장교들이 간절하게 원하던 보물은 영국령 인도였다. [23p]

 

그러다가 1807년 런던에 전해진 정보는

영국 정부와 동인도회사 책임자들에게 상당한 경각심을 불러일으켰다.

나폴레옹 보나파르트(Napoleon Bonaparte)는

파벨의 후계자인 차르 알렉산드로(Aleksandr)1세에게

인도를 함께 공격해서 영국의 손에서 빼앗자고 제안했다.[23p]

 

하지만 나폴레옹도 영국도 그 중간에 놓여진 중앙아시아가

어떤 모습인지에 대해선 완전 무지한 상태였다.

 

영국인들은 원래 바다를 거쳐 인도에 이르렀기 때문에

그때까지 인도로 가는 전략적 육로에는 거의 관심을 기울이지 않았고

바닷길을 열어놓는 일만 걱정할 뿐이었기 때문이었다.

 

그래서 침략자가 인도로 들어 올 수 있는 길을 탐사해서

지도를 그리라는 명령이 급히 떨어졌고

페르시아와 아프가니스탄의 '샤(이란 등지의 왕을 가리키는 말)'와

'아미르(아랍어로 사령관이나 제후를 가리킴)'에게

외교 사절단을 파견해서 그들이 적과 손을 잡는 일을 막으려고 했다.[24p]
